it will depend on the type of clematis you have. some get cut back some do not. find out the name of the clematis and go from there. The gardeners Encyclopedia of plants and flowers is a good book Im sure that somewhere on the net you could find that info out also.
Do you cut a clematis vine back or will it come back on it's on ?
If it's the type of clematis that loses all it's leaves I'd cut it back severely while it's dormant. I don't like the way it looks when all the dry matted plant matter above becomes the base for the new plant.
If it's the type that doesn't lose it's leaves, just cut back what you need to to keep it looking neat.

Reply:I have never cut mine back, %26amp; each year it becomes more full with blooms. Just give it a trellis to climb %26amp; mulch the roots, so they do not get to warm during the summer.
Reply:Either way. Willl contnue to grow on existing vines, but you can cut it down if you want, will resprout.
Reply:You can cut it back, severely. Or you can just leave it alone. The gardener I had years ago would cut ours back to just sticks and it would come back. I haven't touched ours in 4 or 5 years, it just keeps growing thicker each season.
